——和以前镜头的设计思想有不同吗?
前泷(光学设计):佳能在光学系统上的设计思想一直没变。理想是点、线,还是正方形都如实拍出原样,也就是尽可能抑制像差。佳能内部也将此称为“像差怎么抑制都不过分”。但能达到什么水平的像差抑制,受当时技术水平的影响。EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM和RF85mm F1.2 L USM的设计思想没有不同,但采用的技术不同。比如BR光学元件、设计的经验技术、新玻璃材料等。

——EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM在最大光圈下,合焦面略微柔和的成像,即“镜头韵味”广受好评,不少人迷恋这款镜头的“肉”感成像。关于镜头韵味方面,这次是怎么考虑的?
前泷(光学设计):基本来说,像差怎么抑制都不算过分。但受尺寸、价格、所用技术的制约,无法保证像差绝对为零。另外,我们当然知道有所谓的“镜头韵味”。在实际的光学设计中,基于像差无法完全消除这一点,设计目标就是取得虚化效果、分辨力等的平衡。基于F1.2大光圈,要想取得这种平衡非常困难,需要精密地控制到达成像面的全部光线。虽然最近的数码补偿变得容易,但其实数码补偿像差的前提也是原始图像尽可能接近无像差。

还有一个重要原因是对焦方式的差别。EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM的对焦方式是前组镜片直接伸缩式,即镜头全长随着对焦距离拉近而伸长的方式。RF85mm F1.2 L USM采用内对焦方式,对焦时镜头全长不变。实际上EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM安装卡口适配器EF-EOS R,在最近对焦距离的状态下,全长仅比RF85mm F1.2 L USM短一点。基于此前提,RF85mm F1.2 L USM却实现了更高的画质。
